Mandarin or Cantonese translation?
When considering English to Chinese translation, the variant of written and spoken Chinese which should be used in communications depends on the target market. The three most commonly used Chinese variants are:
- Mandarin, written using short-form / simplified Chinese characters – Mainland China and Singapore
- Mandarin, written using long-form / traditional Chinese characters – Taiwan
- Cantonese, written using long-form / traditional Chinese characters – Hong Kong and overseas Chinese
Although the three are mutually intelligible, there are distinct differences in vocabulary and writing style between the three. We strongly recommend that clients produce separate Chinese translations for Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. You should ideally have your documents translated into Simplified Chinese for Mainland China, into Traditional Chinese for Taiwan and into a separate Traditional Chinese version for Hong Kong.
It can be unwise to cut costs by translating into only one Chinese language variant to cover the whole of Greater China, as there are long-standing rivalries between the different ethnic groups. Failure to distinguish between them displays a lack of cultural sensitivity and can be seen as demonstrating inadequate commitment to the region.
Fortunately the linguistic similarities between Mandarin for Mainland China, Mandarin for Taiwan (sometimes also referred to as Taiwanese), and Cantonese for Hong Kong are sufficient to enable us to translate into more than one variant in a cost-effective way. For more information, contact us.
Chinese localization services
Chinese translation services can be provided by our specialist Mandarin and Cantonese translators for all industry sectors. Whatever materials you need translated, our Chinese translators will accurately localize your content keeping in mind grammatical differences, cultural sensitivities and stylistic preferences.
We are unusual in using native English speakers for our Chinese to English translation services. This ensures that the translations are stylish and fluent, while complex or obscure concepts are conveyed in a way that can be easily understood by readers who are not familiar with Chinese culture.
